  • Notifications Banner

Despite having all notifications turned off for this app, whenever I read an article with live updates, a banner reading “LIVE” will show on my phone even upon existing the app. This is even when updates are turned off for that particular article. It is incredibly frustrating that this app’s interface supports running notifications on your phone even when you opt out with no resource guide or help in turning them off.

I’m a paid subscriber and there’s no option to remove ads. I’m going back to using the website where I can block ads.
  • Annoying videos

The videos on the app are very annoying and there appears to be no way to stop them. Unfortunately, it's the same way on the website. Give us a way to pause these videos. Please!

Wholly unavoidable complication the makers of the app just can't seem to figure out. Moving in and out of stories breaks the apps ability to insert you back into the scroll at the point where you left off. I've complained numerous times about this glitch, to be told to "reset" the app each time. Here's a novel idea: Why don't you fix the app? Beyond this, ultimately, minor annoyance, the app works great. But it gets old playing the guessing game every time I return to the scroll from a story...

    Untrustworthy. Not worth your time.
  • Good but Highly Partisan

App works fine. Easy to use as expected. I knew the NYT was partisan left, but I expected some balance from a “professional” organization. Constantly alerted to bad things the right does, but I’ve never seen any alerts for negative articles about anyone on the left. Most articles seem like what we used to only see in the opinion columns back in the day with real newspapers. At least the articles aren’t strewn with mistakes and typos like Fox News and CNN. Your editor is good.
  • Have you subscribed to everything?

It seems time to review again. I subscribed only for properly verified journalism. My key criticisms are: 1. You will be constantly upsold feeds for “The Athletic” and their cooking feed. You cannot opt-out of having articles you cannot read being in your feed. 2. They do a ton of tracking, and now have taken to making you re-answer weekly if you reject cookie tracking. The app privacy audits show Meta is heavy in their app. Good things: there is moderately good editorial control outside of ads and upsell content. Saving articles is nice, and search is reasonably good.

Latest update is not compatible with iOS 15, so I am kicked out of the NYT and need to cancel my subscription, since it is now useless for me. Even the podcasts (the Daily) won’t work.
  • Can't download content

The app is good enough when connected. But if you want to download a copy of the current issue of the paper for offline reading you're out to f luck. Forget use on an airplane. Note to Developers: this works great on the Economist app...
