  • Decent content, but dead app

There are a few bug in this app that don’t let you progress properly. It doesn’t seem to be actively maintained anymore and when you try to contact support you get an error message. Even so, good content in digestible lessons that would be valuable to a beginner. Fun mini games that help with understanding strategy.

I like it but it never gives you an opportunity to test what you have learned in a game and adds always keep popping up like buy premium magnus trainer

I really like this app so far as someone who knows the basics of chess, but wants to improve their tactics. However, I have run into the app shutting off randomly and I cannot make an account at all; it seems that they do not have a help desk either.
  • Genuinely impressed, 100/10 well worth the time and money

Honestly, this is probably the most instructive chess app there is. I have the platinum membership on chess.com, I have pocket chess, I have books, nothing has made me feel like I’m “seeing the game” like this app. The games are a bit tacky, but they’re fun, I almost never get the “figure out the right move” on the first try but it gives me the chance to do it over again and I’ve learned a lot about rook activation in the end game, as well as what pawns to target. I don’t know how much Magnus actually had to do with this, but it’s a great app and if o could tell people to only buy a premium for one chess app it would be this one

When I started playing, I noticed each lesson took a moment to load after tapping instead of just opening immediately, but decided to proceed regardless. I later found that other features of the app had issues as well. At a certain point, it suggests you make an account to save progress. The “sign in with Apple” option doesn’t let you select it, the Facebook option says it’s not supported or something like that—even though you’re meant to add friends through Facebook. I managed to actually make an account using my email, but after I completed this, I was closed out of the app. Additionally, there was an option to add a profile picture for the account and there was no way to choose a photo from camera roll, so the only means of adding a pfp was to take a picture with the camera which I thought was strange.
  • 200 ELO bump in 1 hour! fun, novel, and effective

After trying a lot of chess apps, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The creator's love for the game really shines through, and the minigames are a fun, unique, and very helpful way to improve. The free plan is generous, and less than an hour of minigames helped me bump my ELO by almost 200 immediately after stalling for ages. By far one of my best chess downloads ever.
  • Love it
