  • Excellent Movie Library Catalog Application

Movie Explorer Pro (v2.5.3) is an excellent app that allows you to track all of your HD-DVD, DVD, 3D, Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, iTunes, and Ripped TV/Movie Titles on the MacOS platform. The metadata that you can add for physical media is quite extensive, including Runtime, Image Aspect Ratios, Number of Seasons (for TV Shows), Audio Codecs, Subtitles, Purchase Date (Amount Paid), Condition of the Discs, etc. You can also track Titles that you have shared (Loaned) with your Contacts and add specific Comments about the contents. In addition, you can also track the Titles that you've watched via the Watchlist feature. Movies and TV Shows are tracked separately with vivid, rich Poster Art. This visual representation of the contents of your Library truly makes it "come alive"! The app works in conjunction with The Movie Database, TMDb, to relate items, using UPC Barcodes, that can be scanned, using the FaceTime camera (or other USB cameras) or manually input by the User. Powerful queries, using regular expressions, (similar to the functionality found with Smart Playlists in Apple Music) can be constructed to slice and dice the contents of your Catalog to varying degrees of organization and specificity. Customer Support has been exemplary! Questions about the product are quickly answered with clear examples, specific steps to follow, and knowledgeable information. This is the best app of its type for tracking all of the Movies and TV Shows in your physical media and stored digital content libraries. A 14-Day Free Trial is available to test-drive the app and determine whether it meets your specific needs. I encourage you to give it a try! You'll be glad that you did!

This is an incredible App, the best I've seen on any Apple Platform. It's integration to your Apple Library and Trakt.tv make it the perfect companion. I do have a request. When will we get an iPad landscape version? And an Apple Phone version? I'd also like to see the TV Show integration be a more top-down rather than episode based. So we see the Show and then a breakdown of seasons and only if we choose, a breakdown of episodes. But the product is IMPECABLE!!! Thank you!!!!

If they had IPAD versiom I would have given them 10 stars without any hesitation. What a shame??? You have to have always your deskyop to consult your database. It would have been great to do itso on Ipad. Cheers

I wrote the original review after being frustrated with what I precieved as a lack of understanding to address the issue I was having. Although I am disappointed at the time it took to finally resolve the issue, it was resolved. While I really like the layout and function of the product, the lack of a real tutorial or manual documentation is fustrating. You would think that detailed documentation would reduce customer service requests? When I contacted support, they were prompt with the reply, but completely missed the question. When I replied, I included multiple screenshots to show the issue, but they continued to give the same answer, which was not a solution to the issue. I have been using and programing computers for 30 years so I hope to keep banging and pounding to find a solution, because customer support is no help. And for what its worth, I paid for the Pro Version.

Not only is this an excellent app to organize and nagivate one's collection (and to do so visually) the support I recently recieved was outstanding, and what has prompted this review. I had an issue which they quickly identified as to be missing Metadata from a TV show. I requested support via the Beta Magic website, recieved a response within hours, and promptly told me the fix (Refresh Metadata). Bingo, problem solved. The folks at Betamagic "Get It." Pleased as punch.

I have tons of videos that I have accumulated over the years that I have been trying to keep organized. I gave up trying to use some prior organizers because I was not satisfied with any of them. In the meantime, I used the folders and the directory structure to somewhat keep my files organized. With much time on my hands (C-19), I decided to see if anything new was available to handle this job. After trying several from the App Store (and out), I found Movie Explorer. I installed the free version and tried it out on some of my folders with the video files. It worked great. Just point the import tool (its called New Location for some reason) to your folder and it does the rest including matching your file/movie from TMDB and adding them. As long as your file name somewhat resembles the actual movie name, ME2 can find and match it. Because I liked it so much and I wanted the Pro capabilities, I ended up upgrading to the Pro version almost right away. BTW, the free version has in-app purchases to the Pro version including the free 14 day Pro trial. The other options are for monthly and yearly subscriptions. Or you can buy the Pro version directly if you don't want a subscription to MEP. I did have some questions and indeed found a bug. I contacted the author and he responded right away, answered my questions and got me squared away. I spent a day adding all my video files and MEP took care of organizing the videos so now I know what I have and what I may want to watch. Great app and great support.
  • Not what I was hoping for

I have well over 100,000 TV episodes that I have converted from thousand of DVDs that had bought over the years. I was very happy with iTunes and my ability to use it as a cataloging system. After ripping the DVDs, the episode were tagged and included arranged by seaon. Life was good. As we know, that was all changed. I went in search of an app that would take my fully tagged episodes and pull them into a cataloging system that would present them in a very user friendly manner. I though Movie Explorer Pro would do that. I was wrong. In order to pull from iTunes, I had to have purchased the episode from iTunes. Strike One. Tagged and completely labeled shows are not scanned so to incorporate all the information already embedded in the file. Strike Two. Whatever Database is searched to provide the information does a cursory search and pulls the first thing it comes to. For some reason it labeled many of my shows as animé -- which is odd since I don't have a single episode in that genre. Strike Three. So, it's struck out for me. It was a waste of $25. I will not be using this app.
