iReal Pro is an exceptional tool for the improvisor. I wish it was available when I was younger.

This app works fine as a backing track tool once you've already learned the chords and basics of a song, but it's absolutely awful for getting to that point. There's no way to hear individual chords without starting full playback. Stopping resets your position and clears your selected start point (forcing constant re-selection, even if you’re in loop mode). And the real head scratcher: you can't see the actual notes being played by default, or even hear the chord options when you cycle through. These features are such low-hanging fruit and wouldn’t detract from the app’s core workflow / target user in any way. What's most frustrating is that forum posts show users have been requesting these basic learning features for over a decade, but they've been completely ignored. Simple additions like chord preview on-click, persistent selection, note visualization, and better hotkeys would transform this into an actual learning tool, but the developers clearly don't prioritize that use case. If you want to learn new songs from scratch, this isn't worth the money - it's only valuable if you're already proficient and just need accompaniment.
  • “Real” Drums?!

The “real” drummer must’ve forget his metronome…The time is terrible and the turn-arounds sound like someone is dropping marbles on the ground!! I’ll stick to the midi drums.

This app is incredibly useful for learning tunes, having a portable bible of chords to pull out on a gig, and improvisation practice.

I've used iReal Pro on and off for a few years. I'm not a serious musician, but for where I'm at it does everything I need as a practice tool -- being able to listen to backing tracks to try to learn tunes, and then play along with them. I also ran into a technical issue and received very quick support help, which I appreciated.

iReal Pro is an incredible program and tool for rehearsing, learning, and practicing. It has an easy user interface with an amazing amount of control to cater each song to your style, tempo, key and more with excellent sounding instruments. It's fun to use and play music with!

I contact iReal Pro support some time ago about the inability for users to edit backing tracks or create backing tracks. I bought 3 extension packs, not worth it. Few are really usable. No offense to the author/composers but some are just ridiculous. I guess I’m a schmuck for purchasing.
