  • Broken App

I recently subscribed and had no issues intill the most recent update. The app is almost unusable constantly signing me out and constantly not loading or it completely stops streaming. The biggest issue for me is no movie info no cast info no director info no language info and no country info. Also there is absolutely no customer service contact info just a bunch of useless guides. I will be canceling next month if not resolved.

  • How could they make it worse?

This app has always been awful, yet somehow they took it to a new low. Now, movies have even shorter descriptions, they don’t tell you the language, nor country of origin, and I have to pull out my phone to know anything about the movies on here. We pay for a subscription, and effectively never watch anything on it anymore because discovery is too many steps harder. Collections are now all fire-y looking, and one is indistinguishable from the other. Less information than ever, too. The app was awful in its previous incarnation, mind you, but I’d take that over the latest version in a heartbeat.

Between the cancellation of TLDI and the new app interface, my very favorite streaming service that airs in my home 24/7 got a 1-star review from me last week. After having spent a little more time acclimating as I’m admittedly averse to change, I’m now prepared to give it the review it deserves. Realistically, due to navigation and streaming issues, the aforementioned cancellation of Joe Bob and the fact that I can’t get any information about a title - including what language it’s in - until I begin watching it, my rating should be 3 stars at best. That said, Shudder has all the content I want in one place, and I’m consistently inspired to watch movies I wouldn’t ordinarily think to watch but do simply because I enjoy an overwhelming percentage of what Shudder has to offer. I remain concerned that this long overdue and ultimately disappointing app update is a move to roll Shudder and its subscribers onto AMC+. I’ve had AMC+ and all I watched was the Shudder content - and I need the live channel that comes only with a subscription directly to Shudder - so I hope I’m wrong. My one additional pain point is the 3-4 minute commercials that now air between every film on the live channel. I don’t mind watching credits. I don’t mind watching trailers for new releases. I do mind watching trailers for AMC+ titles as well as Shudder titles I’ve seen several dozen times (I mean the films, not the ads, but the statement is true of both). Previously, Shudder aired one 3-4 minute commercial per month max and only between the first and second films on TLDI. Now they’re airing the same commercials and haven’t even removed the “Stay Tuned for More Joe Bob” verbiage from the upper left corner of the screen. That’s super lazy and thanks for continually rubbing in the cancellation of Joe Bob. I still love Shudder though. And finally being able to pause/rewind/fast-forward on the live channel - which now has a guide! - is a game changer.
  • Change the app title

It's incredibly stupid to have changed the title from Shudder to Shudder: Horror & Thrillers when the latter won't even remotely fit on the Home Screen. Looks like cheap garbage.

I’m a longtime subscriber and I love the service. However, I have experienced technical issues for the last several months. The app is constantly going down and telling me that the content is not there. Please, please address this issue!

  • The Update is Bad

I have had Shudder basically since the beginning and seen this platform in a few iterations, but the new update I really don’t understand. I am specifically reviewing the Apple TV app, so I’m not sure if these issues extend to other updates that may have been done to the website or any apps through other devices. I’m still playing around with it, but here are a few things I’ve noticed and hate: 1. The movies no longer tell you what language they are in. They used to show this when you clicked to learn more about the film, but it’s all gone. So now I either have to Google the movie to find out if it’s a foreign film or let it start playing and wait to see what happens. I like a foreign film, but I don’t always want to watch them and so now I’m having to do a lot more work and honestly, it’s making me just not engaged movies that I’m not familiar with. 2. The new descriptions of movies are really bad. We used to get a few sentences about what to expect and it’s now been reduced to a one sentence AI looking summary that don’t even really make sense in some cases. I truly think someone was tasked with taking every summary and throwing it into an AI bought and asking them to change it into a one sentence in summary. 3. The search feature no longer lets you use the microphone option to search for movies. So now I either have to type in what I’m looking for, or go searching for it in one of the categories, or what’s more commonly happening is I will say the movie into the Apple TV remote, and then Apple defaults to all sorts of other apps to play these movies in before Shudder so I’m just not engaging the platform as much as I used to and watching movies other places. 4. The TV feature stinks. We used to have three dedicated channels which now has been reduced to one and it’s hard to find. On the homepage it’s kind of hidden in the middle of everything and if you go to the left menu, you have to scroll down to see that it’s even at the bottom. If you don’t want to do TV anymore, just get rid of it, but this “update” is bad. Like I said, I’m still playing around with the app, but it just feels like someone took like a Hulu or Netflix overlay and forced it upon Shudder. It’s genuinely sad because this used to feel like a thing that was run with so much love for the genre and run by people who really understood the horror community and now it just looks and feels like everything else. I mean genuinely it looks like the Screambox app now, but at least Screambox lets us search by genre of horror. I’m not to the point of canceling yet, but this update is really making me question why I’m even continuing the service. It feels like we just keep losing anything that makes Shudder special and when you couple that with an update to the app that has made the offering worse, what’s the point?
  • About to drop Netflix...

...because all I watch is Shudder for less than half the price...and unlike Netflix, Shudder is constantly improving, constantly adding new titles, from big mainstream blockbusters to obscure titles I haven’t seen in decades. Better, they actually do pay attention to their title request forms. I know because they have obtained more than two dozen of my requests, most of which were not widely known or readily available...too many and too quickly fulfilled to be coincidence. Also, very quick, very polite customer support. I host a horror podcast, so I watch a minimum of 3-4 horror movies a week. True, I sometimes turn to Amazon Prime or one of the free streaming services like Tubi or Popcornflix, but 90% of the time, my go-to is Shudder. Is there a catch? If you’re deaf, yes. They still have a ways to go on captioning their films. They’ve come a long way to accomplishing this, but they need to target 100% compliance. My 5-star is a good faith vote in that I have seen such a big improvement over the past couple of years that I believe they will...sooner than later, I’m hoping. Besides that the only thing I worry about is when they realize they are way-undercharging for their services and hike their rates. Yes. They’re that good. If you love horror, there is no reason not to pay the equivalent of a cheaper Starbucks coffee for an entire month of more horror than anybody could possibly watch...even me. ***Still love Shudder's content, but the update is the worst--one line descriptions for the movies, no director or stars listed and worst of all, no trailers. I honestly don't see any improvement at all. Which they would return to their former interface.
