  • Hard to understand spoken words

Edited. App is worse than I thought it was.: With Duolingo, the accent for French is not good at all. I get questions wrong because I can’t tell what word is being spoken. I tried Babbel first and it sounded much better, but they cost too much for me right now. Honestly, I’ll be switching when I can afford Babbel. Duolingo will ask you to translate a sentence or answer a question involving a word which it has never introduced to you before. The most recent lesson I did involved words I have never seen and expected me to answer several times through the lesson. There are also too many times where the hints or translations are completely wrong. A person I work with who speaks fluently in French and three other languages told me I “sounded like an idiot” and if I “spoke to a French kindergartener in the way Duolingo teaches, they would laugh”. I know I am learning some French, which is why I keep using the app, but I know I am not learning the proper way. Once I am able to pay for a better learning app, I know I will be able to learn French and speak properly.

I was in the middle of Geometry Dash and it notified me about doing my Spanish. I died.

I’ve actually seen a lot of hate towards Duolingo. I’m not sure if it’s coming from competing language-learning platforms or users with genuine critiques, but as an absolute beginner knowing nothing at all, it helped me a lot and made learning interesting and fun. I used this app to learn vocabulary and sentence structure and then dug deeper into grammar concepts, reading comprehension, and speaking through other outlets but Duolingo got me started and I still use it everyday! A few things I don’t love about it are the ai phone calls (specifically flagstaff, the calls with Lilly are fine) sometimes feel pointless because to me. it feels I’m being asked to say a sentence aloud that won’t ever be used again unless I practice saying it on my own. It’s not harmful but its not especially helpful either. I also don’t love how when you do the word matching thing it doesn’t say the last word you match out loud like it does for the rest. I think hearing pronunciation helps so I wish they would use every opportunity to go over it. I also wish that they would incorporate more translating with no word bank or at least give you the option to do it without or even make the word bank a little harder because it feels like it’s too easy at times. The listening portion is also way too easy I wish the questions they would use to text your comprehension tested you a little more. Besides those things which are totally subjective I really enjoy this app it’s helped me a lot. Even with my criticisms I have to give it 5 stars because of what it’s done for me. Definitely worth a try.

I love how Duolingo teaches almost EVERYTHING, but one complaint that I have is how you have to pay in gems for lots of stuff and if you need a lot quickly, you have to buy them.

Simplesmente perfeito para aprender outra língua. Estou aprendendo Italiano e estou amando. Hoje faz 35 dias consecutivos que uso o app para aprendizado, ele eh bem dinâmico, e vc aprende sem perceber.. sem exigir muito. Eu vi que vários amigos estão com mais de 300 dias consecutivos, isso só prova a leveza que eh aprender com esse app! Acertaram em cheio na forma de aprendizado. Grazie, Duolingo!

I loved Duolingo but everything changed. It started testing me on vocabulary that I had never learned. Not just one or two words but entire sets of words. I don’t enjoy it anymore.
