    I recently encountered two scammers pretending to be buyers. They contacted me about my listing and then tried to trick me into clicking an external payment link to “receive payment.” This is a very obvious scam, yet it seems extremely common on Carousell. Scammers can easily create accounts, message sellers, and send fake payment links. If a seller isn’t careful, they could lose money or personal information (I almost lost all my money in my bank account!) Carousell seriously needs to do more to prevent this type of fraud. There should be stronger monitoring of suspicious messages and better warnings to protect users. Right now it feels like scammers are everywhere and sellers are left to deal with it themselves.

    When I first started using Carousell it was a much better experience but now it’s clear the app is there to make money, the benefits to people trying to buy and sell are secondary. First Carousell removed the tracker of seller responsiveness. This was a big mistake. Previously if a seller was listed as unresponsive one wouldn’t bother trying to do business with them. Now there’s no way no know so the amount of time I’ve wasted with unresponsive sellers is staggering. However this is good for Carousell’s bottom line as people spend more time on the app and see more ads. Second the term “Professional Seller” is misleading yet that is always what comes up first on searches because they pay to have their listings promoted. Many of them are scammers, you make an offer or ask a question and get an auto-reply asking for direct payment. Often they will list items that aren’t available just to get you on their page and only then tell you to cancel your order. As for customer service, forget it. I’ve made many reports about suspicious activity (some of it extremely obvious scams) and nothing has ever come of any of it. In my opinion Carousell has placed profit over safety and that’s why I’m almost ready to give up on this app. Such a shame because it used to be decent but now I maybe get 1 positive transaction out of every 10 attempts and have basically given up trying to use it.

  • Spammy app and they will keep resetting notification preferences

    notification settings in the app were turned off, but the company regularly resets them to allow notifications (“listings you’re interested in” and “from carousell”) so that they can send you spam. they also use transaction notifications (which I allow, because you need them to get message notifications) to send you even more ads that are not transaction related.
