I work as a math teacher. I’m often in the middle of taking notes with my class when I select from the pen feature to the eraser feature or lasso feature, and OneNote takes me back to the top of the screen almost every time. Then I have to scroll back down to the section of notes where I was working.

OneNote is phenomenal on my phone and Windows desktop. I use it all the time. The problem is I also have a Mac laptop. OneNote used to work on the Mac, but now is unusable on the Mac because it does not reliably save changes. This means I will type to-do items on the Mac, trust they are stored in my system, and then they are not present on my phone and windows computer. I instead have to use the online version in a browser window on my Mac. While inconvenient, this would be acceptable if the online version were good. However, the online version is missing multiple functionalities, namely the ability to sort tabs alphabetically. I have been using OneNote for years and have hundreds of tabs. Not having them alphabetical is a significant time suck as I am trying to quickly reference important information in a meeting, but cannot find it. I have been working with OneNote so long and so much of my information and GTD system is there that I will continue to use it for now. However, due to their refusal or failure to keep their web and Mac apps up to speed with their Windows apps, I would not recommend OneNote to new users, especially if you anticipate any possibility of having an Apple device someday. I also would not recommend new users start OneNote because if they dropped the functionality of a once useful application (Mac), I do not know what else they will someday decide to drop the functionality on. For example, if the app on my phone stops working, I’ll need to drop OneNote altogether and start the laborious process of transferring all my systems into a new platform. Summary: great on certain devices, not on others.

    The syncing is very inconsistent
  • Half-assed garbage

This app won’t allow you to create or edit tables. You can’t even set the color of text, add highlights, or change the ducking font. Microsoft would very much like you to draw everything with your finger like a toddler. Because that’s how adults take notes.

Thankful the software exists but still has integration lag, sometimes won’t load images, etc.
  • Like a vertical Kanban board with nesting and whiteboard options

I love this app for organizing my life. It's the most useful way to prioritize and group my tasks while syncing across devices. It works like a Kanban board with and vertical organization rather than horizontal and allows me to drag-and-drop organize, group, and nest notes/tasks on the fly. It includes many features for manual annotation like whiteboarding, audio notes, and sketching. A friend made me try it, and I have used it daily ever since. If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, this may be one of the best apps you can get for personal productivity task management and note collection.

Update 4/1/26) The recent visual changes to my Notebook and pages in the app are awful. Thank goodness my computer versions weren’t changed. Please revert back! Just now found another really bad thing! Because I sync, my computer OneNote notebook is now changing page appearances!!! OMG, stop it! 12/15/22) Since the last update, it will not sync automatically upon opening. I can scroll the page down and it will sync manually. I love OneNote on all of my devices, especially my computers! 2/22/24) GET RID OF THE NEW HOME TAB. Or at least give us an option to do so. It’s useless. I don’t want to see all of my scrambled notes when I open the app. It just adds another step to get to my notebooks. 3/13/24) GET RID OF THE HOME TAB! USELESS! Or give us an option to hide it! Thanks for a good app.
