Don’t postpone joy. Discover why SkySafari is the #1 recommended astronomy app for serious amateur astronomers since 2009. Here's what’s new in version 7: + Complete support for iOS 18 and iPhone 16. Version 7 brings a new and immersive stargazing experience. + Events Finder - go to the new Events section to unlock a powerful search engine that finds astronomical events visible tonight and far into the future. The finder dynamically generates a listing of moon phases, eclipses, planetary moon events, meteor showers and planetary phenomenon such as conjunctions, elongations and oppositions. + Notifications - the notifications section has been completely revamped to allow you to customize and manage which events trigger an alert notification on your device. + Telescope Support - telescope control is at the heart of SkySafari. Version 7 takes a giant leap forward by supporting ASCOM Alpaca, INDI & StarSense Explorer. These next generation control protocols allow you to effortlessly connect to hundreds of compatible astronomical devices. SkySafari 7 brings social stargazing to mobile devices with two new features to help you connect with other like minded people. OneSky - allows you to see what other users are observing, in real time. This feature highlights objects in the sky chart and indicates with a number how many users are observing a particular object. SkyCast - allows you to guide a friend or group around the night sky through their own copy of SkySafari. After initiating SkyCast, you can generate a link and conveniently share it with other SkySafari users via text message, apps or social media accounts. + Sky Tonight - jump to the new Tonight section to see what’s visible in your sky tonight. Expanded information has been designed to help plan your night and includes Moon & Sun info, calendar curations, events and the best positioned deep sky and solar system objects. + Improved Observation Tools - SkySafari is the perfect tool to help you plan, record and organize your observations. New workflows make it easier to add, search, filter and sort data. + Home Screen and Lock Screen Widgets keep your favorite astro information at your fingertips. The Small Touches: + You can now edit the Jupiter GRS Longitude Value in the Settings. + Better Moon Age calculation. + New grid & reference options allow you to display Solstice and Equinox markers, Orbit + Node markers for all solar system objects, and tick marks and labels for the Ecliptic, Meridian, and Equator reference lines. + Previous In-app Purchases are Now Free - this includes the H-R diagram, 3D Galaxy view, and the PGC galaxy and GAIA star catalogs. I have been following Andrew McCarthy on X ( @AJamesMcCarthy ) with great enthusiasm. He recommended your app and I must say, WOW. This absolutely motivates me to get back into amateur astronomy. My last observation was Shoemaker-Levy 9. It was with a very old refractor but I got a blurry glimpse. I tried to keep up with the tracking manually but wound up breaking the head. With this App I can now pick up where I left off. Before I die I hope to see the rings of Saturn one last time. Stargazing is truly silent poetry. -Jack @FreeStateOfFLO @Snake Plissken

I’ve only spent an hour or two trying to figure out how to orient this thing so that I can point at the sky and tell what I’m looking at. I bounce between google/ safari search and am still confused, the writups say it’s hard to use… wouldn’t it make more sense to open the app and be able to point at a star and see what it is. I’ve gone to different sites and they all go thru an extensive setup procedure… going to have to take a 5 unit class just to be able to point at the moon and have it say we’ll…. that’s the moon, should start simple, tired of searching the internet trying to figure it out….. you don’t start out playing the piano with complicated symphonic pieces…. Should start simple. It’s supposed to be fantastic if you can get thru the learning curve

This app is a wonderful way to enjoy and learn about the night sky!! They keep improving the interface with each release, and I find this version very convenient to use. If you’re new to it, there’s a little bit of a learning curve. Explore the menus and play around. Pointed at the sky and find out what you’re looking at! (Thanks to customer support as well! After I left a negative review complaining about repeated notifications, Simulation Curriculum got in touch and explained how to fix it.)

Not that great. App seems to love to lock you on alt/az. Tried all the tricks still reverts, oh the scope settings, not. Support “crickets”? The older versions were good this is junk!
  • Figured out how to add my scope

Not sure if it was the latest update, but I finally found how to add my Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ to the app. Haven’t had a chance to use it yet, but I’m happier now.

  • Constantly Crashes after 3-5 seconds

30 September 2024: This app use to be my goto; but, now all it does is constantly crash when trying to use it after showing the sky map for 3 to 5 seconds. I can’t do a darned thing with it on my iPad Pro 12.9” Gen 5 with iPadOS 17.7 as well as on an iPad Pro 12.9” Gen 3 with iPadOS 18.1 Beta. It is a huge disappointment ESPECIALLY when I am spending $29.99 / year in subscription cost. I suggest you fix this immediately. Until then, I will not recommend this app to anyone. 14 December 2024: Developer sent email via App Store stating that the crashing issue has been resolved as of Wed 11 Dec 2024; however, the Community notes still says the fix is planned and the App STILL CRASHES if WiFi is still turned on.

Sky Safari Pro does lots of good things. The only issue I have is the somewhat cumbersome method for communicating with Simulation Cirriculum, the producers and maintainers of Sky Safari. You can’t talk to them directly, on.y through the user groups. I find this less than satisfactory. However I have had no issues with Sky Safari operation, only a few data base errors. I do highly recommend Sky Safari for its many good points.
