I went to try the trial, i Canceled my subscription and they still charged me the $106.99 for a year. You don’t not even get access to anything other then the hiking and biking for the one I did. Thought I was paying for all maps, guess again. Not worth the $. That and they still charge you after canceling the trial. If On could rate .5 of a star I would for functioning map. Shop else where folks.

I subscribe to the Elite version of the app so that I can see landowner details and have offline maps. Im often on unmaintained trails and am amazed by how closely the app matches the reality. Thanks onX!

Looks killer, we will be on a week tour in late November and the detail looks amazing.

This app looks fantastic for what it is. Has a lot of nice map layers and the user interface is clean and simple. However, when it actually comes time to using this app when you need it most, it’s absolutely useless. I downloaded some offline maps to use for a backcountry ski tour in a remote range in Nevada. We panned out multiple potential routes to take for this tour while we had service before getting out there. I made sure to download a medium resolution map of anything we had the potential to ski. While camping the first night by the trailhead, we wanted to map out some routes for the next day based on conditions. Of course I had no service at this point but didn’t think that would be a problem because I had downloaded a map of the area for offline use before I got out to the range. The offline maps feature is garbage. We’d map out some lines but it wouldn’t calculate the vertical-only the total mileage. We had to estimate our vert based on the topo lines on the map which is fine but if I’m paying for premium features the least it could do is tell me vert and mileage even with a downloaded map. Additionally, there was some glitch that made it almost impossible to map a route at all because the app kept telling me “Sorry, the snap-to feature is unavailable offline” even though I specifically set the build route mode to point-draw because I kept getting those errors. Even when using point draw it would throw that same error statement and not let me draw a route. After opening and closing the app a few times it worked but it was really just by chance. It would randomly do this whenever I was creating a route. Creating routes with service is also underwhelming. OnX simply gives you total mileage and vert when you build a route. That’s it. Caltopo blows OnX out of the water in terms of metrics for planning ski tours on unfamiliar terrain. I’d love to see OnX add the ability to see a plot of the slope angle and aspect just as CalTopo does. The premade lines between skiing/hiking/biking/climbing are cool. It’s a good idea but they haven’t perfected it yet. All Trails is probably a better bet to actually see what people are saying about trails and I’d say they have a bigger database of trails to begin with. I’m pretty impressed with the ski touring stuff they’ve got, some lines have really detailed descriptions and pictures. Seeing data from SNOTEL sites is an amazing feature, but that also needs work. Many of my favorited SNOTEL sites across the Great Basin mountain ranges do not actually show any data on OnX. The plots are empty. But there is a link provided that takes you to the exact SNOTEL site for that location which is nice I guess. Just wish the data would always show so I didn’t have to go find it manually every time. Overall, I’d say at this time the premium features are not really worth the price if you’re looking for something to actually plan out hikes and ski tours. CalTopo gives much better insight when planning routes. This is the only app I’ve ever attempted using an offline download map feature so I can’t speak to which app does that best (I’m going to guess it’s probably not this one based on my experience). If OnX could provide similar metrics that CalTopo does for route planning and straightens out the offline map stuff, you’d have a winner here. Until then it’s something that looks pleasing to the eye but isn’t super useful when it comes to backcountry travel.

I was a long time customer of the “Other” hiking app and though I’ve only had onX for a few weeks I can tell you it’s is MUCH better! I had a question about my subscription and I got a reply from a REAL HUMAN!! I love having off-line maps at my fingertips! A lot of my hiking is not in cell service areas! Cheers,
