Description

NOT JUST ANOTHER MEDITATION APP Don’t think of Waking Up as a conventional meditation app—think of it as a new operating system for your mind, and a guide to living a better life. We aim to offer a far deeper approach to mindfulness than you’ll find elsewhere—one that fundamentally transforms how you see yourself, and the world around you. But you’ll also discover life-changing, secular wisdom from top scholars and experts, on everything from sleep and doing good in the world to time management and happiness. Waking Up is free for anyone who can’t afford it. We never want money to be the reason why someone can’t benefit from what we’ve built. ***Created by Sam Harris Sam Harris, neuroscientist and best-selling author, built Waking Up to be the resource he wished he’d had when he began exploring meditation over 30 years ago. Sam only includes those practices and insights he’s found to be utterly life-changing. The same is true for the many teachers, scholars, and experts you’ll meet throughout the app. ***A step-by-step approach to mindfulness We’ve heard from thousands of members who say they never really understood meditation until they took our 28-part Introductory Course. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced practitioner, you’ll dive straight into the deep end of real mindfulness, so you don’t waste any time on the surface. ***Learn the true purpose of meditation Meditation is about more than just relieving stress, sleeping better, or improving your focus. While it can help you do all of that, our goal is ultimately to help you open the door to a deeper understanding of yourself. ***A place for serious seekers Explore some of life’s most important questions, on topics like neuroscience, psychedelics, enlightenment, ethics, and Stoicism—from renowned authors and professors like Oliver Burkeman, Michael Pollan, Laurie Santos, Arthur C. Brooks, James Clear, and others. ***In-depth theory and practice Waking Up explains both the theory and the practice of meditation —so you don’t just learn the “how” of mindfulness, but also the “why.” You’ll be guided by prominent figures like Joseph Goldstein, Diana Winston, Adyashanti, Jayasāra, and Henry Shukman, who teach a wide range of contemplative practices, including Vipassana, Zen, Dzogchen, Advaita Vedanta, and more. ***Timeless insights, modern lens Within Waking Up, you’ll find some of the most profound spiritual teachings from throughout history—those that have stood the test of time. And you’ll hear from historic voices like Alan Watts. But we also pressure-test ancient wisdom against modern science, so you won’t find outlandish claims or anything we haven’t found to be empirically true. ***A comprehensive guide Waking Up supports your growth and development in a number of different ways. You’ll find an abundance of useful features, like meditation timers, in-app support messages, an ever-growing audio library, and daily reminders to help bring your mindfulness practice into your life—plus, Waking Up allows you to save all of your meditation sessions to your Apple Health app. “Waking Up is, hands down, the most important meditation guide I’ve ever used.” Physician Peter Attia “If you’ve had trouble getting into meditation, this app is your answer!” -Susan Cain, best-selling author “Waking Up is not an app, it’s a path. It is equal parts a meditation guide, a philosophy master-class and a highly-focused TED Conference.” -Eric Hirschberg, former CEO of ACTIVISION SUBSCRIPTION Subscriptions automatically renew, unless auto-renew is disabled at least 24 hours before the current period ends. What a blessing to have found this app and be slowly walking the path now of meditation. I’ve been called to begin practicing for some time, and it was this app & Sam Harris and his wonderful way with language that has helped me begin to make small breakthroughs in what was initially a very intimidating project of beginning. Eternally grateful to him & the team at Waking Up! Keep up the awesome work!
  • Feels elitist to me

I have meditated for years, and used many different apps. I recently tried this based on a recommendation. I liked the introductory course as a refresher of the basics of mindfulness and purchased the subscription. I like the moments, lessons, etc. However, I have found some of the programming to feel elitist in two ways. First, whenever there are examples given of someone’s work, they all seem to be things that require extensive formal education, such as professor, inventor, etc. I myself have graduate degrees, but this vibe still bothers me. In addition, very little in this program seems to acknowledge the myriad of neurodivergent and mental health issues that arise in a meditative practice, whether it is forms of depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, PTSD, autism spectrum, etc., etc. Personally, I feel like I’ve gotten just as much out of apps are available for free or a lower fee and that feel more inclusive. I would not re-subscribe.

What Sam has created is such a beautiful support in these perilous times of illusion and anxiety. The app works extremely well and his sharing of a vast and varied library of guidance and suggestions for a clearer path is very generous. I can’t thank him and his team enough and am very grateful for his gift.

This app has helped me build a consistent meditation practice over the last few years. I have tried so many apps and meditation programs and nothing comes even close to the scope of Waking Up. It has helped with my life long battle with depression and ADHD. I don’t know what I would do if there wasn’t Waking Up. Thank you Sam for being who you are.

Sam Harris and the other teachers are life changing. I never write reviews, but I really wanted to this time. Get.This.App.

I adore all planks of Sam’s work and feel my life has improved as a result of tuning into him over the years. I don’t spend as much time on Waking Up as I would like—it doesn’t have quite the same allure as when a new Making Sense podcast drops. But, every time I do, I feel the better for it. I especially love and have made good use of the Moments feature—they always seem to arrive at the perfect moment to help make life’s difficulties seem less intractable.

This app has helped me enter into a meditation practice that I have always wanted to have. The intro course really helped me develop basic skills to feel confident to keep coming back to practice everyday. I’m really grateful for the app, Sam, and all who have helped put this together. Thank you
  • It’s awesome but here are some expectations

It’s really enjoyable the way Sam teaches it. The intro series, which is about 28 different guided practices, starts off simple then gets fairly advanced and even a bit confusing sometimes, so there’s nothing wrong with repeating the more basic ones (the first ten or so) over and over, and once you get the basic idea of these, even practicing them on your own some. It can take years to get really good at this stuff and to understand the more abstract concepts, but benefits can be seen almost immediately upon starting, and the journey is actually really enjoyable.

I’ve always struggled with meditation as I thought it was about clearing your head and thinking about nothing. Sam Harris has taught me how to meditate in an approaching, understanding, and forgiving manner. Furthermore, the support crew are very understanding and offer scholarships to help make membership affordable for all. I couldn’t recommend this app more!
