  • Deceptive Pricing

Shows in app purchases but that’s not the case you can’t use the app unless you start a 7 day trial which isn’t long enough to evaluate something like this, or pay $39.99 a year. Couldn’t tell you if this is a functional app or not.
  • No More ‘Pages’ App, What a Joy

I had always written in Microsoft Word, even on Mac, and switched a year or so ago to Apple’s Pages app for the cloud capabilities because I like to have access to the things I’m writing on different devices at different times. After using Pages for a few months the program began freezing my computer, taking up all my RAM. Eventually, it locked up the machine to the point where it had to be reset. When it came back, it synced an old version of a piece of writing with the cloud, erasing thousands of hard-fought words. At that point I knew I had to look for a different solution.
  • Not meant for iOS

Far inferior to the free Apple Notes app simply because this is not an app that was meant for iOS….its clunky, and if you want to just “write without distraction”, use the Apple journal app on iOS
  • A really, REALLY solid writing app.

Ulysses works exactly as advertised. Write, organize, export—it’s all there, and appreciated. You can even “copy as” to take any markdown section and turn it into HTML, rich text, or plain text. Super useful. About all I would like added is auto tracking words written per day, and maybe a way to hide the markdown fully (not via themes, but in the actual editor). I say that because it can be easy to miss extra spaces between words. Markdown adds spaces visually (depending on the theme, again), and sometimes when exporting, those words lack the crucial space between them—which the author missed in editing because VISUALLY, there is a space (e.g. markdown coding—an asterisk, or something). Other than that, excellent, and my primary writing choice.
  • No sample without “free trial”. Plus bad grammar

I downloaded this to try it out. There is no trying it out without SIGNING UP for a free trial. I don’t do that. Second, this is a writing app, and the grammar in the “you must read this” section was atrocious. Like ESL bad. Too unprofessional for me to go any further. Deleted.
  • Beautiful and simple; sometimes too raw

I love the native-Apple feel of the Ulysses interface, the relatively simple but effective feature set, and the automatic sharing across devices. So far (after a year) my only complaint is that Markdown still feels clunky. Would prefer a more WYSIWYG editor.

I am a developer and my job has switched to writing and editing lots of md files for Claude. I LOVE this app for editing md files. I feel like I think more clearly and creatively when I am editing md files in Ulysses. The only feature I wish it had was a way to easily create a new md file on the file system. Right now a new file defaults to the cloud.
  • Prevents Restart While Selling Subscriptions

So, I was trying for so long to understand why I couldn’t restart my Mac, and why it wouldn’t go to sleep. Then I discovered that Ulysses was open and had a blocking modal dialog that was offering me an honestly pretty good offer that I totally would have taken, but I needed to restart my Mac, not be opening my wallet in this state. So I try closing Ulysses, but I can’t. I have to respond to the offer: do I want to open my wallet on a system with a compromised state or do I want to reject this offer? Well, I guess I had to reject the offer, but Not So Fast! Why would I reject that offer, you ask? Well, I try to tell you that there was a technical problem with the offer, that even if I had wanted to accept it I could not because my system was not in a place where I _could_ accept it. But you didn’t supply any way for me to do that, any way to respond. You said, email our support. Really? You asked me a question but didn’t want the answer, apparently. Would this be the last time this happened? No. Apparently Ulysses starts on every system start and makes _some_ offer every time now. That’s great and kind, but I really need it to not be blocking administrative things on my machine, such as restart when there are no documents open. It is for this reason that I conclude that the app must not have been designed very well and did not undergo basic usability testing, so it gets 1 star. I was considering subscribing, but now I am not. It’s back to Notes.app for me. I guess nothing can really beat the simplicity of system apps, at least you know they undergo testing.
  • Serviceable Markdown Editor

This is a perfectly serviceable markdown editor that removed the distractions between me and my writing. There are some things I don’t like (the default formatting for quoted passages) and I don’t use most of the newer features but I’ve been using it for years and find the subscription price well worth it to have the app maintained and work on multiple generations of phones, tablets, and laptops.

just a heads up you won’t be able to do anything not even look at and getting a chance to explore the app without getting their subscription
